From 1937 to 1948, Ko Tarutau was seen as a "deep-sea hell" according to the information panel at the entrance to the historic Ao Talu Wau Trail. Of the nearly 3,000 prisoners held in the former Talu Wau prison, hundreds died. Due to disease and famine, many have become feared pirates, and today's banners, dilapidated buildings and wood carvings offer a glimpse into this intriguing chapter of Thai history.
