In 1987, the Luxembourg Savings Bank decided to dig a tunnel to connect the various bank buildings located on the Bourbon Plateau together, and the idea of converting the tunnel into an art gallery quickly crystallized, and the work required to create the gallery was carried out between 1992 and 1993, and the first gallery opened in 1994. The tunnel is about 15 meters underground and reaches a length of about 350 metres. The main part of it is the Im Tunnel Gallery of Contemporary Art, and allows the organization of temporary exhibitions featuring works by world-renowned artists and lesser known talents, and the remaining part of the tunnel is dedicated to the world famous photographer Edward Steichen. ), who was particularly famous for the exhibitions "The Human Family" and "The Bitter Years".
