Information about Aegean Maritime Museum
The Aegean Museum is housed in a building of traditional Cycladic architecture from the 19th century that has been in operation since 1985. The building belonged to Nikolaos Sourmelis, the legendary captain of the shipping navy “Enosis” who played a crucial role in Crete’s fight against the Turks. You'll see replicas of pre-Minoan era ships, important naval documents, historical maps, equipment, documents, and rare coins. The most striking exhibition is located in the elegant garden at the back of the museum. You will also have the opportunity in the park to see marble replicas of gravestones graves from Delos and Mykonos and see shipwrecks lost at sea.
