Elbasan is the third largest city in Albania, located in the center of the republic, on the banks of the Shkumbin River, 45 minutes from the capital, Tirana. This city is famous for its ancient history, as it was founded by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, in 1466, as a base for his military operations against the Albanian leader. You can see the remains of the walls of the Roman fortress of Elbasan, which was built in the third century BC. You can also get acquainted with a group of Ottoman mosques, such as the King's Mosque, and historical churches, such as the Church of St. Mary, in addition to the picturesque natural features, which are reflected in the green mountains and picturesque rivers.
