Originally, Al Wakra was a small, modest pearling and fishing village. It has expanded to become the second largest municipality in Qatar in terms of area over the years. The name Al Wakra comes from the Arabic word “Wakr” which means “bird’s nest”, and the municipality was named by this name. In honor of the nearby hill that once housed the nests of various birds, according to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. This area is famous for Khor Al Adaid. It is a nature reserve recognized by UNESCO and is considered one of the country's most famous attractions. Al Wakrah is also home to the Mesaieed Industrial Center and Al Janoub Stadium (Al Wakrah Stadium), which will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup match.
