Information about Zwart Bastion (Black Fort)
The Black Fort is the fortifications built previously by the Portuguese, and is believed to have been named because this area was constantly covered in dark smoke emanating from fire or cannons, guns, and blacksmiths. It was named the Black Fort after the Dutch occupied Galle Fort on March 13, 1640. In about 1730 AD, it is a secret exit from the Galle Fort in the form of a tunnel that has not been excavated yet, and it is considered one of the distinctive and interesting places for lovers of history and ancient antiquities. The fort still maintains its magnificent architecture and design until now due to the efforts made by the government .
