The church has a long history in the city. The first mention of it in ancient documents dates back to 1250. The church is located on a small island in the Limmat River. It was renovated at various times through the ages, and was completely rebuilt in 1486 during the Reformation period. The head of the reform movement at the time transformed it from a church into a library after its reconstruction.
