This pair of Vero Gate towers at the entrance to Vero Street is often the first glimpse visitors get of the Old Town, and as you pass them, you'll feel like you've left the 21st century behind and fallen into the mid-18th century. The towers are actually just a precursor to what was a more complex gate system built in the 14th century. Most of the gate was demolished in the 1880s to make way for traffic, but these two towers have survived and have since become a symbol of the city.
