Vila Franca Island is located opposite the town of Vila Franca do Campo, about one kilometer from the coast. It was formed as a result of the flooding of an ancient volcanic crater with water. It is one of the main tourist attractions in São Miguel. It has been classified as a nature reserve, and its surroundings are lined with dense vegetation. While in its center there is a natural lake almost completely circular and linked to the sea by a narrow channel, and its clear waters and a small beautiful beach are excellent for swimming and diving.
