The cathedral of Versailles was originally a chapel that was supposed to be the south wing of Notre Dame of Versailles, but in 1740 King Louis XV decided to convert it into a chapel to be built in front of the chapel. The church officially became a cathedral after the French Revolution, and was the home of several important events such as the swearing-in ceremony of Pope Pie VII on January 3, 1805 during the coronation of Napoleon I.
