The magnificent cave city of Vardzia is a cultural symbol and an amazing natural phenomenon of a special place in the heart of Georgia. King Giorgi III built a fortress here in the 12th century, and his daughter Queen Tamar built a cave monastery that grew into a sacred city that probably houses 2000 monks, and is famous for being a spiritual stronghold on the eastern frontiers of Christianity. More than 400 rooms, 13 churches and 25 wine cellars have been discovered in these amazing caves, and more is still being discovered today.
