The valley extends over an area of 132 km (51 sq mi) and is located in the Sierra de los Órganos Mountains, where tobacco and other crops are grown at the valley floor mostly by traditional farming techniques and many caves are dotted in the surrounding areas. The prominent limestone cliffs that rise like islands from the bottom of the valley are called mogotes and can be up to 300 meters in length.
