The construction of the observatory began in 1899 and was completed in 1907. It has a two-lens telescope that allows for a magnification of 600 times. The telescope stands on an anti-vibration pole. Weighing nearly 12 tons, it was designed by Carl Zeiss and considered a masterpiece at the time. The telescope underwent a recent restoration in 2006, and was put back into the observatory in 2007. Public tours take place every Thursday/Friday/Saturday evening: winter time: 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm, summer time: 9:00 Evening - 10:15 PM.
