Perched on the cliffs above one of the best surfing spots in Bali, Uluwatu Temple is one of the island's most famous temples thanks to its great location. Archaeological discoveries here indicate that the temple is of megalithic origin, dating back to about the tenth century, and it is believed that the temple protects Bali from evil sea spirits, and the monkeys that live in the forest near its entrance are believed to protect the temple from bad influences. The temple has a scenic walkway, and although only Hindu worshipers are allowed in the temple, it has a beautiful atmosphere, and the daily sunset dance performances are well worth a visit.
