The National Women's Monument is one of the most famous and most important historical and archaeological monuments in Bloemfontein. It was built to commemorate the 27,000 Boer women and children who lost their lives in British camps during the Second Boer War. The monument has been classified as a World Heritage Site, and it consists of an obelisk. It is 35 meters high and below it is a sculpture of two sad women and next to them a dying young child, as an expression of the tragedy that befell civilians as a result of the war.
