The Hanging Church is the oldest existing church in Egypt, so named because it was built on two of the ancient towers of the Roman fortress that had been built in the second century AD, and it was renovated over the past various ages. The church consists of a main nave and two small wings, between them eight columns on each side. Inside are many ancient statues of Jesus and the Virgin, in addition to parts of Egyptian national newspapers. It has been renovated several times and has been the trials of priests, bishops, and other sinners. It is a wonderful archaeological place with a very distinctive architectural character, a must-go when visiting Cairo with family or friends. It is also an important shrine for all Copts from all over the world.
