Tabarka is a quiet coastal city with an old Genoese fortress that dominates a long bend of white sand. It is known locally as the "City of Music", thanks to the music festivals that take place there every year, especially in the month of July, when the city hosts the famous jazz festival full of sounds Rai (a fusion of Algerian protest pop), Latin and international beats, aside from that midsummer event, Tabarka has always been an old-fashioned local resort, and a good base for exploring the coast's remote beaches and hiking in the surrounding cork forests.
