Information about Sydney Observatory
The 140-year-old observatory is the oldest in Australia and is a National Heritage listed weather station, astronomical observatory, workplace, science museum and educational facility. Its distinctive building is surrounded by peaceful gardens, where visitors can sit and enjoy the stunning views. It should be noted that on the site of the observatory was a windmill, and then a fortress to defend the city against attacks by the French and the rebels. This fort was also used to send signals to passing ships, and then turned into an observatory during the nineteenth century. It is now a working museum, where visitors can observe the stars and planets, through the modern Schmidt-Cassegren telescope, and enjoy the beauty and splendor of the building's design from the outside, and the distinctive colors of the bricks used in the construction.
