One of the city's highlights, the modern Surat Thani Mausoleum is stunningly designed and covers a large open green space along the main road. It is located on the northwest edge of the city near many government buildings. This area was formerly government offices, but was destroyed in 1990 by communist rebels, and inside the mausoleum today there are a number of artifacts such as the image of Buddha, various inscriptions, and ceremonial gongs.
