The original Roman building dating from the second half of the twelfth century during the reign of Dom Dinis was replaced by the Gothic Church of St. Martin, according to the stone stela of Margarida Fernandes, and it underwent minor restorations during the Renaissance and the Nehaji periods. It was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1755, and was later rebuilt while preserving the features of the eighteenth century.
