The Spanish Arch is one of Galway's most prominent symbols, and is believed to be an extension of the medieval city walls of Galway, designed to protect ships anchored at the nearby quay while unloading goods from Spain, and was partially destroyed by the tsunami that followed the famous Lisbon earthquake in 1755, and the area around it has become today one of the most vital areas, especially during the summer and sunny days.
