The Shangri-La was built in 1937 as the home of the famous (Doris Duke) in Honolulu. Inspired by Duke's numerous travels throughout North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, the museum reflects the artistic and architectural collections and designs from these regions. Designed by Duke in collaboration with renowned architect (Marion Wyeth) to reflect the multicultural beauty in this house, Duke collected key elements representing Islamic history, art and culture in Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Central Asia, India and parts of Southeast Asia with the aim of promoting the study and understanding of culture and the arts Islam in Hawaii.
