Feldkirch, the old district capital of Vorarlberg and the largest town in Austria, lies about 35 km south of Bregenz, where the Ill River runs through a rocky gorge from the Walgau Valley to the Rhine Valley. Schattenburg Castle dominates the cityscape and offers great views of the city, and the castle can be accessed via a steep path. The castle was once the seat of Montfort's nobles from the early 12th century until 1390 and the castle includes a beautiful courtyard and a palace with banqueting room. It also includes a local museum with a collection of weapons and a Roman cross dating back to 1250, as well as an old inn.
