Documents indicate that the Church of São Tiago was founded in 1206, but there is a tradition that lays its foundation in the time of Fernando I; The King of León, who built it upon the restoration of Coimbra from the Moors in 1064, and its grandiose and robust appearance make it a fine example of Romanesque style at the time. The church’s interior was redesigned in the 16th century, when an imposing Gothic church was built on the left side.
