Before the city palace was transformed in the thirteenth century into the residence of the Spanish kings, it was originally an Islamic fortress. It is also said that this palace was originally a fortress built by the Romans in 123 BC, so a tour of the city palace will take you back to a number of time periods at the same time. Once you pass the entrance to the palace, you reach the King's Courtyard or the Courtyard of Honor, which is where you find St. Anna's Church, which dates back to the early 14th century.
