The rocky monastery of Saint Dimitar Basarabovsky is located 10 km south of the city of Rus in the valley of the river Rusinsky Lom near the village of Basarbovo. The name of the monastery was first mentioned in 1431 in a Turkish tax register, it was abandoned in the 16th century and restored again in 1937 At present, it is the only active monastery in Bulgaria. It was declared an archaeological and cultural site of great importance in 1978, and attracts large numbers of visitors annually.
