Information about Rize Fortress
A huge medieval castle, partly ruined, located in northeastern Turkey in Rize, on a hill southwest of the city center, offers a panoramic view of the city. The castle consists of two castles, a large castle and a small lower castle. It is believed that the large castle was built during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who ruled from 527 until 565, and the history of the lower castle dates back to the thirteenth century. The fort's walls, built of ash and mortar, cover an area of 480 square metres, are 2-20 meters high, and 2-3 meters thick. The castle walls in the southern part were also restored in 1989, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched a project to restore Rize Castle in 2011.
