It is a building converted into a shrine museum dedicated to the life of Jose Rizal who was imprisoned in it, a national hero of the Philippines. He was a nationalist and one of the most famous supporters of reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. It is recognized for being an advocate of peaceful means in promoting institutional reforms. He did not support the use of violent means. He became a martyr of the Philippine Revolution when he was executed in 1896. Visiting his shrine is a worthwhile excursion if you are in Manila.
