The name Ribeira Square translates to "River Square", and it was the commercial center of Porto during the Middle Ages, and the industries that provided bread, meat and fish were concentrated in it, but in 1491 a fire destroyed many of its parts, and most of the houses and shops had to be rebuilt. Today, with colorful and winding streets, galleries filled with local art, exquisite gift and handicraft shops and cafes serving delicious local delicacies, its modern buildings have been added in a way that preserves the traditional charm.
