The Ribat of Monastir is the oldest and most important defensive fortification built along the North African coast by the Arab conquerors in the early days of Islam. This building was founded in 796, and underwent several restorations during the medieval period. Four buildings fall into two inner courtyards, and also includes a spiral staircase of about a hundred steps leading to the watchtower, at the top of which messages were visible at night with the neighboring ribat towers, from which visitors can enjoy a wonderful view of the city of Monastir and the open sea.
