The Republic Square is the heart of the old part of Viana do Castelo and the site of many civic buildings of historical importance. Seven narrow lanes converge in this wide square, lined with a distinctive group of restaurants and cafes that crowd their tables with visitors in the summer, and the Chavarez Fountain is the focal point. For the square, it was built in 1559 according to the design of João Lopes.
