The Pyrmont Bridge, which connects Sydney with the western suburbs, is one of the oldest conveyor bridges, and has been declared a National Architectural Landmark. This bridge was opened for the first time in March 1858, and at the time was a wooden bridge, with a metal middle, including a pedal, which raised the bridge for the passage of ships for a certain fee. But when the government bought the bridge, it scrapped the fees and turned it into a permanent steel bridge, and it took 33 months to build, until it opened in 1902, coinciding with the start of cars in Sydney.
