The gate began as a wide crossing, where small merchants handled arrivals and departures. The square is also home to one of the city's most famous statues, El Oso el Madrono, whose name means bear and strawberry tree, 4 meters high, weighing 20 tons, and constantly surrounded by groups of tourists from around the world.
