Information about Porta Nuova
Porta Nuova, or as it means "the new gate", is the largest gate in Palermo, located at the entrance to Casaro Street, the main and oldest street in the city. The gate was built to celebrate Charles V's 1535 conquest of Tunisia and his visit to Palermo, Sicily. According to the historian Tommaso Fadello, the original gate was built in the fifteenth century. The building was initially called Porta del Aquila, meaning "the eagle's gate," but the people of Palermo used to call it Porta Nuova "the new gate." And the decorations and various geometric shapes.
