Information about Phnom Bakheng Temple
Considered the main temple of the first Khmer capital in the Angkor Wat region, and still standing as one of the world's greatest architectural treasures, Phnom Pokheng Temple was built by Yasuvarman I between the late ninth and early tenth centuries as the centerpiece of his new capital, Yasudharapura. At the top of the hill, it is famous for its architectural design in the form of a stepped pyramid, which reflects the image of Mount Meru - the home of the Hindu deities -. It also contains five shrines representing the five peaks of Mount Meru.
