Orvieto Cathedral is a large 14th century Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. Since 1986 the cathedral has been the episcopal seat of the former diocese of Todi. The building was erected by order of Pope Urban IV to commemorate and provide a suitable home. The corporal of Bolsena, a relic of a miracle that is said to have occurred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena, and the facade of the cathedral is characterized by designs inspired by the period extending from the fourteenth century to the twentieth century.
