The Valley of the Ponte Alto is considered one of the most beautiful natural areas in the city of Trento, attracting many tourists since the nineteenth century. It is a picturesque area with a number of limestone caves located on the bank of the River Fersina, surrounded by many picturesque natural features of green spaces, towering trees, huge sedimentary rocks and waterfalls. The area is famous because the oldest hydraulics or “fluidics” works related to the design of dams, pumps and the control of water forces were carried out. The first dam was built in the area at a height of 40 meters in order to protect the city from floods in 1500 AD.
