As early as 1993, villagers in Nungwi (a village adjacent to Zanzibar) opened this turtle sanctuary in a large natural pond, and since then they have been trying to protect these beautiful prehistoric creatures from predation due to their meat or shell. At this interesting landmark, visitors will find turtles of various types, ages and sizes. It is important to know that the proceeds from the entrance fee to the shelter also funds a project to raise awareness of the importance of turtle conservation among local children, as this is the only way they can ensure the long-term conservation of turtles.
