The new fortress of Corfu was built in order to provide additional protection to the island over that of the old fortress of Corfu in order to protect it from any possible danger from invaders. Formerly used for defensive military purposes, this fortress has become an important cultural center hosting cultural events all year round and featuring an exhibition of painting, sculpture and photography. Today the fort serves as the headquarters of the Corfu Naval Station and still maintains the water depots and arms and ammunition depots as they once were.
