In 1778, the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences established what, after several expansions and name changes, became the world-famous National Museum. The National Museum is the best of its kind in Indonesia and a visit to it is a must. It is an archaeological, historical, ethnic and geographical museum, located in Jalan Merdeka Barat Square in downtown Jakarta, specifically on the western side of Merdeka Square. The huge collection of this museum begins in the open courtyard with a wonderful ancient statue from thousands of years ago, and includes a wonderful theology section with dolls, wooden figurines and paintings, as well as some wonderful tapestries and more.
