The National Gallery of Victoria, established in 1861, is in one of Victoria's oldest and most visited museums, displaying a collection of Australian and Asian art. Australian artwork includes Aboriginal art, Colonial art, Impressionist art, 20th century art, and contemporary and modern art. As for Chinese works, the process of collecting them began in 1862, one year after the establishment of the gallery, when Frederick Dalgetti donated two Chinese paintings, and the Asian collection has since grown, to include important works from across the continent.
