Information about Musee Ahmed Zabana
The Ahmed Zabana Museum, located in the center of the city of Oran, was established in 1885 by a famous scientific institution at the time, the Geography and Archeology Foundation of Oran Province. The idea of establishing a museum in the city was for Commander Demaeght (interested in antiquities and inscriptions), who in 1882 collected various objects divided into three sections: coins (13 pieces), Roman and African antiquities (16 pieces), and natural history, which were added to it when the museum opened. Two exquisite Roman mosaics by Portus Magnus. Other sections were added to the museum later, including a prehistoric and ethnographic section, painting and sculpture sections, and original drawings and inscriptions. The need for a suitable building was evident, so the current headquarters located at 19 Zabana Street was built in 1933, and it was officially opened on November 11, 1935 in the Palace of Fine Arts building. The palace includes a museum, a library, and a school of fine arts. Upon independence, the museum remained entrusted to the Municipal People's Assembly of Oran until 1986, to move under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, and to change its name to the name "National Museum Ahmed Zabana" in honor of the well-known martyr Ahmed Zabana.
