Information about Mosque Bou Ftata
The Bu Fatata Mosque was built during the reign of Emir Abu Akal between 838 and 841, and served as a model for the Great Mosque of Sousse, which was built twenty years later. Although there is no conclusive evidence, scholars speculate that the mosque was built for the Emir’s private use. This mosque is rectangular in shape, and consists of a small prayer hall preceded by a portico, and horseshoe arches that support the ceiling rest on rectangular piers. At a later time, the triple facade of the mosque is surmounted by kufic inscriptions that include the date of construction, and the mihrab is surrounded by two small columns, and the floor level of the prayer hall today has been raised slightly compared to the original building.
