Joaquim António de Aguiar was a Portuguese politician and three-time Prime Minister of Portugal. A monument was erected to him in Coimbra in 1911 in honor of his memory. The statue was made by Costa Mota, who depicted him holding a pen. In his right hand and a paper in his left hand symbolizing the moment when he signed the decree abolishing religious sects in Portugal, the statue is made of bronze, about 3 meters high, resting on a stone plinth about 4 feet high, and standing in the center of Coimbra's center square.
