Monte Church or the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain was built on the foundations of a primitive church from the fifteenth century, and was later expanded to accommodate the increasing number of churchgoers, but was later destroyed in 1748 by an earthquake, and its current structure was completed in 1818, and today it constitutes the most important Pilgrimage site in Madeira. The church contains elegant chandeliers, a statue of Our Lady of the Mountain, and beautiful pieces of gold and silver made in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as the tomb of Charles I of Habsburg; The last emperor of Austria, who went into exile in Madeira in 1921.
