The Millennium Monument is dedicated to the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of the people and national independence. In the front of the monument is a large stone sarcophagus surrounded by an ornate iron chain and while some books refer to it as a tomb, it is not a burial place. Immediately behind the sarcophagus there is a column surmounted by a statue of the Archangel Gabriel. In his right hand the angel holds the holy crown of Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary, and in his left hand is an apostolic cross with two bars, a symbol given by the Pope to Saint Stephen in appreciation of his efforts to transform Hungary into Christianity. It is referred to in Hungarian as the Double Cross or the Double Apostolic Cross. At the base of the column is a group of seven passenger figures representing the Hungarian leaders who led the Hungarian people to the Carpathian Basin. ) and Töhötöm.
