The Mahkley Farm Museum was established in 1959 when the last owner of the farm became the first employee of the new museum after all the buildings and daily goods were handed over to the Saaremaa Museum. There was no need to collect pieces on this farm, there was a whole bunch of farmhouses and all the collectibles that were used for everyday life, almost all made by people of six generations who lived there.
