The library began operating in 1904, and it housed 33,000-volume material from the city's census office and consisted primarily of social science books. There were demographic, statistical, administrative and social books. Ervin Szabó, who was the first director of the library, had an important role in shaping national sociology, constantly developing the patrimony of a modern group of sociology and social sciences.
