Information about Mediaeval Jewish Chapel
Built in 1364, the Medieval Synagogue is a small two-room synagogue in Buda Castle - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - that was taken from the Jews after a devastating pogrom in 1686 when an alliance of Christian armies retook Buda from the Ottoman Turks. The synagogue was converted into residential housing and forgotten until the 1960s, when Jewish marks were discovered under paint on the interior ceiling during the restoration of buildings by the (then-communist) Hungarian government. Since then the room has been open to the public as a museum, but it was not used as a place of worship religious so far.
