When we say Baghdad, the first thing that comes to mind is the Iraqi Martyr's Monument, which was built between 1981 and 1983 at the height of the Iran-Iraq war, and was revealed as a memorial to the soldiers who fell in that war. It is a distinctive stone monument designed by the Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah Al Turk, consisting of an Abbasid arabesque dome 132 feet high, covered with green-blue ceramic tiles. The dome is divided into two halves, one half containing a circular pool, the other protecting the Iraqi flag and the torch Eternity dedicated to the martyrs of war.
